Review: HanDBase for Android

HanDBase is one of those mobile app titles that anyone who has been around mobile devices for a while will surely recognize. HanDBase, by DDH Software, was introduced for Palm OS initially, eventually migrating to Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, iOS, and now Android. While I don’t use database programs extensively, I have used one program or another for a long while to track media collections or other forms of inventories.
If you’re new to HanDBase, it is a relational database program with cross-platform availability, including Mac and PC desktop versions with a sync conduit. The desktop software has the ability to import either comma separated or tab delimited files, which are then stored as pdb files (yes, the old Palm database format). Because a lot of folks who may be collecting information for databases may want to enter that information in a sequence of format that is easier to use than staring at a straight database sheet, HanDBase also includes a forms designer that allows the user to create customized data entry forms.

Ringo to my Palm Treo 755p and have been using it for the last few weeks --- it’s an absolute joy to use. Ringo is really easy to set up, and doesn’t require any maintenance after that… of course you may find it fun to change your ring tones.
The first thing I did with Ringo is set up different ringtones to let me know by the ring if it's my husband or kids calling. Then I set up my kids so their photos show when they call.

Electric Pocket, a mobile developer, announced that their FlipSide MP3 player app is now available for Windows Mobile cell phones.
FlipSide first rose to prominence on the BlackBerry platform, where it let users scroll through album covers using the handset's navigation controls. The Windows
Mobile version takes it one step further, letting users flick through their music collections with an iPhone-like finger swipe (if your WM handset has a touchscreen). The space bar, meanwhile, can start, pause, or skip songs.
The company said that as with other versions, FlipSide for
Windows Mobile downloads and displays each album's cover art, and links to FlipSide Extras for artist bios and recommendations. The app plays music stored on memory cards in both MP3 and WMA formats. It costs $19.95; a free trial is available at

FlipSide does not change the way the music sounds and is in practice no quicker than the built-in music software, but it changes the ‘experience’ of playing music on a mobile device and is now my preferred method of mobile music management. It is good value for $19.95 and adds a touch of class to any business orientated BlackBerry. Also available for Windows Mobile devices.

Forwarding your text messages to your email

I came across txtForward earlier today, which I thought was worth a mention here. As its name suggests, txtForward automatically forwards incoming or outgoing text messages to a specified email address. This could be a boon for the heavy text user who might just want a simple and reliable way to archive their messages. And in case you didn't realize, text messaging is apparently being used by teens to
avoid taking phone calls by their parents.
Anyway, the unfortunate state of affair is that most smartphones simply do not treat text messages as important, and hence are generally limited in terms of message-level searching, as well as in their backup and archival.
Available for the BlackBerry and Windows Mobile, the BlackBerry version of the software worked flawlessly for me.

HanDBase: A database for the masses, an interview with DDH Software CEO, Dave Haupert
HanDBase is a relational database originally designed to run on Palm PDAs. Today versions run on most major handheld platforms and on Windows. While it is not as “full featured” as the big-system databases such as Oracle, Sybase, and DB2, it has several advantages that are becoming increasingly important as computing moves onto handheld platforms. First, it is purposely simple enough that power users can learn to build applications on top of it, and many have. DDH Software offers quite a few of these apps as free downloads on its Web site, which gives an idea of what can be done with it. Many more, however, have been built by company employees both in and outside of IT organizations to improve internal processes, and many of them are now being used across organizations of every size. Second, because HanDBase runs on all the major handheld platforms, an application built on it will also run across all those platforms. This can be a major advantage to corporate IT, which today is often struggling to support multiple handheld platforms. Third, it delivers a high degree of security, to the extent that several large medical centers use it. And fourth, because it is at heart a database, applications built on it can run independently when network connectivity is unavailable but can also exchange data with large systems such as CRM, ERP, and longitudinal patient record software, when it is. This minimizes the intermittent connectivity problem inherent in mobile computing.

It was very easy to setup categories and organize photos within the program. The interface was very clear and allows you to view your photos in customized categories by list, details,
thumbnails, gallery or tree views. Syncing the program with Facebook was simple, and I was able to quickly and easily upload my pictures to my account with just a few clicks. SplashPhoto also allows you to access your mobile device’s camera from within the program itself, enabling you to quickly categorize and upload your photos.

SplashMoney for Windows Mobile review
I liked
SplashMoney ($29.95). It’s a simple program that allows you to keep tabs on your checking, savings, credit card and other financial accounts but on the same hand a very feature rich, detailed application. Being able to download up to date balances and transactions from your banks is a great way to keep track of your account activity.
