Review: Electric Pocket's "Flipside" MP3 player for BlackBerry

From PalmAddicts:

Flipside seamlessly and greatly enhances the built-in BlackBerry music player by placing additional functionality and much-needed eye-candy.

Flipside takes the MP3s installed on your device or SD card and pulls their album/CD covers and presents them in glorious full color for a more visually appealing interface as you scroll through your various playlists, artists and songs. Creating and editing playlists on the fly is much easier and intuitive than the native music player.

FlipSide: lettore multimediale per BlackBerry

From BBWorld:

FlipSide for BlackBerry review (in Italian)

If you can read this:

Quick Review: FlipSide for BlackBerry

From PDA-247:

Devices like the BlackBerry Bold and Storm have incredibly good audio quality, but the built-in music software is nothing more than a list of the albums and songs you have installed. It works quite efficiently with the trackball, but could do with some sprucing up when you compare it to the iPhone etc.

FlipSide from ElectricPocket does the ‘sprucing up’ for BlackBerry owners and provides a rich experience that takes searching through large amounts of music and gathering extra information to a new and surprisingly gratifying level. I have many, many albums loaded on my Bold and a quick experiment of attempting to download album art proved very successful. Of over 100 albums, only 4 could not be found and many of my albums are what you may call slightly obscure. When you click on an album cover the tracks contained within are listed, and you then scroll through them to choose the one you wish to play. I tried to do a screenshot of the track listing, but snapscreen just removed the listing before the shot was taken?

Choosing FlipSide Extras from the menu will take you to a page at last.fm detailing release information and recommendations for similar music. This appears to then link to Wikipedia for further information and the whole process works very well indeed.

FlipSide does not change the way the music sounds and is in practice no quicker than the built-in music software, but it changes the ‘experience’ of playing music on a mobile device and is now my preferred method of mobile music management. It is good value for $19.95 and adds a touch of class to any business orientated BlackBerry. Also available for Windows Mobile devices.

FlipSide for BlackBerry review

From BlackBerry Rocks!:

Something else that is awesome about this application is that it has THE BEST shuffle mode compared to the other MP3 applications I’ve played with. The others seem to be set on some sort of pattern or mathematical whatever, but FlipSide’s shuffle is really random. I know there are people that can appreciate a good shuffle mode, especially if you don’t want to know what’s going to play next. Sometimes it makes it more interesting versus hearing a set playlist.

FlipSide for Windows Mobile

From AppScout:

Electric Pocket, a mobile developer, announced that their FlipSide MP3 player app is now available for Windows Mobile cell phones.

FlipSide first rose to prominence on the BlackBerry platform, where it let users scroll through album covers using the handset's navigation controls. The Windows Mobile version takes it one step further, letting users flick through their music collections with an iPhone-like finger swipe (if your WM handset has a touchscreen). The space bar, meanwhile, can start, pause, or skip songs.

The company said that as with other versions, FlipSide for Windows Mobile downloads and displays each album's cover art, and links to FlipSide Extras for artist bios and recommendations. The app plays music stored on memory cards in both MP3 and WMA formats. It costs $19.95; a free trial is available at flipside.fm.

Review of FlipSide MP3 Player for BlackBerry

From PalmAddicts:

I am a music and podcast junkie. Before I got my BlackBerry with a 4GB card, I always kept my iPod mini with me to listen to music on the go. After I got a 4GB card for dirt cheap on Black Friday, I decided to buy FlipSide for BlackBerry. They also make a Windows Mobile version as well, and I'll probably get that for my Epix too.

FlipSide is a really simple to use and read mp3 player. The first thing that you will notice is the simple navigation for the BB trackball. just flick the trackball, and you are scrolling through your albums on your memory card. Click to play. Can't get simpler than that.

For all of you fans of last.fm, this program also scrobbles your music to last.fm if you setup your account information.

I like this program so much better thant the media program on my Bold just for the album art, and it even searches for album art to use. FlipSide is definately a good way to get at your music simply, and I know I will be installing this on every BB and Windows Mobile device I have.

Review: FlipSide MP3 Player for Blackberry

If you have a Blackberry and use it to listen to music, you may or may not be a fan of the built-in Media player. Sure, it’s handy to have a program already there, but you may want something more… Meet FlipSide from Electric Pocket.

Overall, I am pleased with this player. If you’re one of those Blackberry Addicts who loves to have their music on them at all times and doesn’t want to carry a bunch of gadgets, then FlipSide will definitely help make your Blackberry a “jack of all trades” that much more.

ZDNet's video reviews of Electric Pocket's BlackBerry apps

I never thought too much about 3rd party application support for the BlackBerry, but I am finding there are actually lots of cool applications and utilities to let you do even more with the device. Three of the latest applications from Electric Pocket that I have had a few weeks to play with are Ringo, PhoneFace Speed Dialer, and Flipside.

FlipSide for Windows Mobile review

One great example of providing a friendlier face to a Windows Mobile application is Electric Pocket's FlipSide. As someone who uses Windows Media Player on my Windows Mobile phone quite frequently, I have to say that the "drill-down" approach that Windows Media Player uses to get to my music can be quite frustrating and, well, bland. FlipSide provides a finger-friendly and visual way of interacting with your music collection.

SmartDeviceCentral: MP3 Tips

Upgrade Your MP3 Player software. Many smartphones these days come with decent built-in MP3 players, such as Windows Media Player 10 Mobile, Pocket Tunes on Palm OS devices, and the newer multimedia-enhanced Nokia handsets. If not, upgrade. For example, the full version of Pocket Tunes 4.0 ($37.99, www.pocket-tunes.com) adds AAC, aacPlus, album art, and Internet radio support. Meanwhile, Electric Pocket's FlipSide ($19.95, www.electricpocket.com) works on trackball-based BlackBerry devices as well as Windows Mobile handsets. It displays full-color album art, retrieves missing artwork, lets you create playlists right on the device, and supports MP3, AAC, WMA, and M4A (but not DRM-enabled) formats.
