What's on my Blackjack: SplashMoney

SplashData's SplashMoney is without a doubt the most feature-filled financial tracking software available for the Windows Mobile platform. I've been using it for about 3 weeks now and I've still not come close to taking advantage of everything it has to offer.

I hate shellfish, but I love LobsterTunes

I came across Lobster Tunes while searching for other ways to make Orb work with Windows Mobile. This program works really slick with any uPnP media streaming, even Windows Media Player 11.

It lets me search any of my directories that I have setup with Orb for music, and it lets me stream that file over the AT&T network (since the Blackjack II doesn't have WiFi). Great if I really need to listen to the podcast I don't have with me but I left at home.

It also plays files stored locally on the device or memory card, plus has a list of online radio stations ready to go, without having to mess with your bandwidth at home. It even plays my songs sideloaded from Napster with ease.

Looks like LobsterTunes is one shellfish I'm going to keep an eye on all the time!

Mobile software Monday: SplashMoney for Windows Mobile

I load up quite a few 3rd party applications on my mobile devices and a few stick around and appear on all of my devices because I find them essential for my daily life. One application that I tried several years ago on my Palm Treo was SplashMoney from SplashData. It has been a few years since I used a Palm OS device as a primary device, so I was quite pleased to hear of the recent launch of SplashMoney version 4.0 for Windows Mobile devices.

SplashID review

“You…shall not…pass!” –Gandalf the Gray

As I was testing SplashID v.4 for this review, I was reminded of the scene in “Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” where Gandalf is facing the Balrog at the bridge of Khazad-dûm. Seen in this light, SplashID would be Gandalf shouting in a voice that only Ian McKellen could deliver to any bad guy that wants your personal data. (Don’t ask me why, it just kind of popped into my head.)

If you are like me, you have slowly collected a massive number of logins and passwords for all of the different web sites you use. As I sit here and think about it, I have logins for Google, MySpace, Twitter, Facebook, .Mac, AOL (yes, I still have that one), YouTube, Photobucket, Flickr, Gizmo, Fring, Skype… you get the idea.

SplashMoney saves the day!

Anyway, I thought I'd just post a quick nod to SplashMoney as it came in really really handy this week while my main PC was offline & I didn't have the intertubes connected at the new casa yet. I've never been one to balance my finances in a checkbook, so it was incredibly useful to have instant access to my online banking through SplashMoney all week. I was able to check balances & transfer money between accounts with ease. The more I use it, the more I begin to wonder how I ever lived without online banking from my phone!

The shopping list manager Monica Geller would be proud to have

Do you remember Courtney Cox’s control freak character Monica Geller from the hit TV series F.R.I.E.N.D.S? I guess if she was a real life person, she would have absolutely gone bonkers over this brand new shopping list manager for PDAs and Smartphones. Although the name SplashShopper is a little misleading, this handy mobile app helps you replace the old scribbled-on-a-piece-of-paper shopping list with a high-tech organizer that lets you create unlimited number of shopping lists with as many categories as you like with its included software for Windows and Mac that allows you to edit, print and sync your shopping list with your handset.

BBGeeks review of FindMe

I like this application. I can see myself getting some great use from FindMe. Whether it is just letting my friends know which of my popular haunts I am at at a particular time, or getting them specific directions to a lesser known location via the map it feature, FindMe will work just fine.

The entire tagging process is quick and easy and was intuitive all the way through.

SmartDeviceCentral: MP3 Tips

Upgrade Your MP3 Player software. Many smartphones these days come with decent built-in MP3 players, such as Windows Media Player 10 Mobile, Pocket Tunes on Palm OS devices, and the newer multimedia-enhanced Nokia handsets. If not, upgrade. For example, the full version of Pocket Tunes 4.0 ($37.99, www.pocket-tunes.com) adds AAC, aacPlus, album art, and Internet radio support. Meanwhile, Electric Pocket's FlipSide ($19.95, www.electricpocket.com) works on trackball-based BlackBerry devices as well as Windows Mobile handsets. It displays full-color album art, retrieves missing artwork, lets you create playlists right on the device, and supports MP3, AAC, WMA, and M4A (but not DRM-enabled) formats.
