HanDBase: A database for the masses, an interview with DDH Software CEO, Dave Haupert

HanDBase is a relational database originally designed to run on Palm PDAs. Today versions run on most major handheld platforms and on Windows. While it is not as “full featured” as the big-system databases such as Oracle, Sybase, and DB2, it has several advantages that are becoming increasingly important as computing moves onto handheld platforms. First, it is purposely simple enough that power users can learn to build applications on top of it, and many have. DDH Software offers quite a few of these apps as free downloads on its Web site, which gives an idea of what can be done with it. Many more, however, have been built by company employees both in and outside of IT organizations to improve internal processes, and many of them are now being used across organizations of every size. Second, because HanDBase runs on all the major handheld platforms, an application built on it will also run across all those platforms. This can be a major advantage to corporate IT, which today is often struggling to support multiple handheld platforms. Third, it delivers a high degree of security, to the extent that several large medical centers use it. And fourth, because it is at heart a database, applications built on it can run independently when network connectivity is unavailable but can also exchange data with large systems such as CRM, ERP, and longitudinal patient record software, when it is. This minimizes the intermittent connectivity problem inherent in mobile computing.

Review: FindMe - Facebook location tagging for BlackBerry

Do you have a Facebook account? Do you enjoy location based applications? Then this is for you!
FindMe is an application that allows you to tag where you are and share it with your Facebook friends. If you set it right, it would even update your Facebook status with your location. I know I’ve seen some people update their status according to what they are doing or where they are. If you don’t want where you are to be known you can shut the application, leave the area as “unknown” instead of updating where you are, or go dark. FindMe also allows you to set a zip or post code to allow your friends to better find you. This application can also add a box to your Facebook profile that auto updates itself whenever the BlackBerry application updates.
Best of all, this application is free!

TUAW Review: HanDBase for iPhone

HanDBase for iPhone is a very powerful and customizable database. There's really no competition to HanDBase, and given their long history and track record in the handheld world, HanDBase will be adopted quickly in businesses where custom databases are needed. At $9.99, this app is a bargain.

Triple Threat Review: 3 SplashData Apps for iPhone

First up is SplashID. SplashID answers the age old questions of how do you keep track of all those passwords rolling around in your head?! How do you keep track of all your credit cards, business cards, bank accounts, 401Ks, IRAs, and who knows what else? Better yet, how do you keep all that information with you at all times, ready to recall at a moments notice?

SplashShopper is another excellent application from SplashData which you could easily say has been mis-named. Yes, it is a shopping application first and foremost. It excels at making boring lists of things you want to to buy at the store (like tomatoes, avacados, Frosted Flakes, etc… or super exciting lists like office supplies!

SplashMoney is actually one of the most unique applications in the AppStore for one main reason - while it can sync to your desktop it can also sync to your bank account and pull all the recent transactions down so you don’t have to enter them by hand!

CrackBerry takes a crack at PhoneFace

When you hear the name Electric Pocket, what's the first thing you think of? Applications like Flipside, Ringo Ringtone Manager or FindMe for Facebook right? Well, try this one on for size; PhoneFace.

PhoneFace takes attaching images to contacts one step further...well, maybe two steps. You're able to assign images found on your Berry, your Micro SD or even images from your contact's Facebook account. You can then browse through the images and find the contact you want. Navigation is similar to the smooth album cover flow that you would experience with Flipside. I was never big on Facebook, didn't even have an account until I reviewed the FindMe application. When I first learned about PhoneFace and its Facebook integration, I could almost hear Al Pacino in my head saying, "Just when I thought I was out...they pull me back in."

txtForward for BlackBerry review

If you are like me you send a minimum of 100 text messages per day.. And I am not one to delete.. :-)
So I needed a way to archive my messages and keep them for eternity! I know one can do a back-up of the phone and include messages but it does not give instant access if you want to re-read any of messages..
Then comes txtForward.. An application for the BB which can automatically forward text messages to an email. Simple? YES!

PhoneFace for BlackBerry review

PhoneFace is a new app from one of my favourite developers Electric Pocket (who brought us Busker, Bugme, Ringo and FlipSide to name but a few…), PF is a speed dial application that scans your Blackberry’s phonebook for contacts with photos and automatically adds them (you can add photo-less contacts and assign one of the many pre-designed icons to them.

SplashPhoto for Windows Mobile review

It was very easy to setup categories and organize photos within the program. The interface was very clear and allows you to view your photos in customized categories by list, details, thumbnails, gallery or tree views. Syncing the program with Facebook was simple, and I was able to quickly and easily upload my pictures to my account with just a few clicks. SplashPhoto also allows you to access your mobile device’s camera from within the program itself, enabling you to quickly categorize and upload your photos.

HanDBase launched for iPhone

DDH Software has brought its database and forms software for mobile devices, HanDBase, to the iPhone. Launched for the Palm OS way back in the late nineties, HanDBase is also available for Windows Mobile (Pocket PC and Smartphone) and Symbian (S60 and UIQ) devices.
As with other versions of HanDBase, the iPhone application allows users to create and edit databases on the iPhone and includes custom views, filters, sorting, and advanced and quick searches, among other features. It also comes with a strong level of security and a myriad of user interface and database design enhancements, according to DDH Software.
In addition, DDH says it designed the iPhone version of HanDBase with finger-friendly navigation in mind, enabling users to move between fields and records by swiping left or right on the screen.

WindowsMobileCool review of Ringo

I was really hoping for greatness with this program and got everything I expected and more. Ringo lets you easily add the awesome raw power of MP3, WMA or WAV format ringtones to every call tone on your device. You can use your favourite music or sound clip as a ringtone - just copy it to your WinMo phone and select it from Ringo’s easy-to-use interface. In addition, Ringo provides an easy way to set and change ringtones and SMS tones for your friends - just pick from a list of the contacts in your address book is listed. Each friend you set up can have a unique MP3, WMA, Wav or Midi ring and SMS tone.

SplashMoney for Windows Mobile review

I liked SplashMoney ($29.95). It’s a simple program that allows you to keep tabs on your checking, savings, credit card and other financial accounts but on the same hand a very feature rich, detailed application. Being able to download up to date balances and transactions from your banks is a great way to keep track of your account activity.

SplashID for iPhone gets a nice review

All of your data on SplashID is encrypted with the latest security methods. Although the desktop application is optional and SplashID works just fine without it - I recommend using both. It is much easier to key a lot of information directly into the desktop program and then wirelessly sync it to SplashID.

Review: FlipSide MP3 Player for Blackberry

If you have a Blackberry and use it to listen to music, you may or may not be a fan of the built-in Media player. Sure, it’s handy to have a program already there, but you may want something more… Meet FlipSide from Electric Pocket.

Overall, I am pleased with this player. If you’re one of those Blackberry Addicts who loves to have their music on them at all times and doesn’t want to carry a bunch of gadgets, then FlipSide will definitely help make your Blackberry a “jack of all trades” that much more.
